Basically, it was the single remaining guardrail on a combined arsenal capable of ending human civilization several times over. It expired on February 4, 2026. There was no replacement or any negotiations.
There was neither a ceremony, nor public debate, no congressional vote, no moment of reckoning. It just expired.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists noted: “For the first time in over half a century, there will be nothing preventing a runaway nuclear arms race.” Nothing. No ceiling. No floor. No rules.
The United States and Russia now point thousands of warheads at each other with zero legally binding constraints on how many, where, or what kind. This happened only a month ago. Most people missed it entirely. It was not the lead story anywhere.
